What Is A Wire Rope Thimble?

A wire rope thimble is a strong metal fitting used to protect and reinforce the eye of a wire rope assembly. Before the wire rope is secured, a loop is formed at the end. The thimble is added to form the eye of the loop. This provides additional protection for the wire rope from direct contact, wear and deformation of the eye, extends the life of the wire rope or wire rope sling, prevents premature failure from wear after repeated high-load use, and helps to evenly distribute the load.

Types Of Wire Rope Thimbles

Thimbles are available in two different duty ratings: light thimbles and heavy duty thimbles.

Light thimbles have a smaller cutting edge and are typically used in static applications such as permanent installations, controlled environments, or situations that will not be subject to much load. Light thimbles are suitable for traditional fiber ropes and can withstand the same loads and rough handling as fiber ropes.

Heavy Duty Thimbles have a wider cutting edge to provide better protection for the rope. Thimble edges have extended protective material and have a tendency to resist deformation in uncontrolled applications. They are typically used in applications that are subject to dynamic loads or loads close to or at the working load limit. Therefore, heavy duty thimbles better meet the needs of dynamic load applications and are ideal for lifting, pulling, and applications that require users to frequently connect and disconnect the thimble from other rigging components.

Wire Rope Thimble Material

When you choose a wire rope thimble, it is important to consider the environment in which the thimble will be used. Sail Rigging offers thimbles in electro-galvanized, hot-dip galvanized, and stainless steel.

Stainless steel thimbles, which are the most corrosion-resistant and extremely rust-resistant, are suitable for outdoor applications, especially in saltwater or marine environments where corrosion occurs.

Hot-dip galvanized thimbles are less expensive than stainless steel thimbles and are also suitable for outdoor environments. Although galvanized parts are also very suitable for outdoor use, galvanized parts may show signs of surface rust if the zinc coating wears off in the load-bearing or contact areas of the part. This surface rust usually wears off during load or use and does not affect the performance of the part.

Electro-galvanized thimbles can also be used outdoors, but it should be noted that the zinc coating is thinner than the hot-dip galvanized coating, so electro-galvanized thimbles may show signs of rust earlier than hot-dip galvanized thimbles, especially when the grommets are exposed to rain, snow, salt spray, or salt water.

It is important to choose the right wire rope thimble and secure it in the eyelet. If the thimble is too loose in the eyelet, it may fall off or rotate; if the thimble is too small or too large, it may become difficult to connect with other rigging accessories of the right size.

Wire Rope Thimble Breaking Strength

It should be noted that wire rope thimbles are usually not marked with breaking strength because the pressure on the eyelet of the thimble varies depending on the tension and pressure direction.

How to install the thimble?

1. Open the thimble with pliers. The thimble is usually used with other rigging components with solid eyes, so it must be opened.

2. You can use pliers to clamp the two sides of the thimble separately, and then rotate the thimble to open it so that the component can be inserted into the thimble, and then put the thimble back in place.
