2 Essential Trailer Accessories for Safe Towing

Trailer Safety Chain

It is very important to choose right accessories to connect to your vehicle when you are towing a boat, camper or utility trailer. Here, we’ll explore 2 key trailer accessories, including trailer safety chains and tow shackles, and why they are vital for safe towing.

1. Trailer Safety Chains

Trailer safety chains are a critical component of any towing setup. These chains serve as a backup connection between the trailer and the tow vehicle in the event that the primary coupling, such as a ball hitch, fails. Without safety chains, a trailer could become completely disconnected, leading to dangerous situations on the road.

When you choose trailer safety chain, you need consider

  • Chain Length: The chains should be long enough to allow the trailer to turn without restriction, but not so long that they drag on the ground.
  • Crossing Chains: It’s recommended to cross the chains under the trailer tongue when connecting to the tow vehicle. This creates a cradle that can catch the tongue if the trailer becomes uncoupled, helping to prevent it from hitting the road.
  • Chain Strength: Trailer safety chains are rated by working load limit (WLL), which should match or exceed the weight of the trailer being towed. The most common grades used for safety chains include Grade 43 and Grade 70 chains, both known for their strength and reliability.

2. Tow Shackles

Tow shackles (or towing shackles) are strong, U-shaped metal connectors with a pin or bolt across the opening, used for securing trailer chains, straps, or ropes to tow vehicles. Shackles are essential for linking chains or other towing accessories to the vehicle or trailer.

Types of Tow Shackles:

  • D-Shackles: Shaped like the letter “D,” these shackles are ideal for straight-line pulls. They are commonly used to connect safety chains to the hitch or anchor points on trailers and tow vehicles.
  • Bow Shackles: With a wider, rounded shape, bow shackles allow for multiple connections at once and can handle a load from various angles. This versatility makes them useful in towing setups where more flexibility is needed.

Key Features:

  • Material: Most tow shackles are made from forged steel, providing the necessary strength to withstand heavy loads. Shackles are also typically galvanized or coated for corrosion resistance.
  • Load Capacity: As with safety chains, tow shackles come with a WLL rating that must meet or exceed the weight of the load being towed. Choosing the right size and capacity is crucial for ensuring safe towing operations.

By selecting the appropriate accessories and ensuring they are properly maintained, you can tow with confidence, knowing that your trailer is safely connected to your vehicle.
